Samuel Edd “Popeye” Strange
Samuel Edd “Popeye” Strange age 89 of Newport, went to his heavenly home and family on October 25, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his parents : Wade and Hattie Brady Strange, wife: Ruby Cate Shelton Strange, son: John W. Stange, daughter: Debbie Epley, grandson: Chip McMahan, great granddaughter: Rebekka McMahan along with 6 brothers and 2 sisters.
He was lovingly known as “Popeye” after his return from WWII where he served in the Navy 79th CBs as a mechanic., stationed in Sipan, Okinwa.
Popeye returned to Newport and began working for Colonel Charles Rhyne, Sr. and Charles Rhyne, Jr. at the Rhyne Lumber Company, retiring after 30 years.
Father of 6 children and 7 step children and loved by many.
Sons and daughters-in-law: Dood and Brenda Strange, Bryce and Sherry Strange, Herbie and Debbie Keller, Bobby and Ann Valentine all of Newport. Sog and Karen Strange, Kingston, TN; Chuck and Victoria Strange of Pigeon Forge, Hack and Tresa Valentine, daughter-in-law: Carla Strange of Morristown, and Jack and Renee Keller of Bakersfield, CA.
Daughters and sons-in-law: Sandy and Ron Etherton, Newport; Sue and Gene McMahan of Johnson City, and Marie and George Johnson of Oneida.
33 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Special friends” Beulah Maloy and Linda Strange. Life long Army buddy: Bryce M. Davis of Nickerson, Kansas. A host of other family and friends.
Services will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 29,2008 at Centerview Free Will Baptist Church with Revs. Jerry Williams, David Hall and Carl Bryon officiating. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.
Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, from 6:00 until 9:00 PM at Brown Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.
He will be sadly and greatly missed by his family, church and neighbors.
