Oscar Carver

Mr. Oscar Carver, age 83, of Newport, went to be with his soul mate for eternity on Tuesday, December 30, 2008.

Oss quickly became a Papaw to everyone that met him. He was a hard working, family oriented man. He was well known as strong, honest, and as his grandchildren multiplied, his heart became softer. He loved the outdoors, gardening, fishing, watching the birds, and swinging on his front yard. His favorite pastime was camping at Tellico with his friends and watching his grandsons trout fish. Oss was a United States Marine during WWII where he received a Purple Heart Award. After returning home from war he married a beautiful woman named Edith Owenby and together they started a family.

Oss and his wife of 54 years raised four children Ray Carver and wife Carolyn of Jupiter, FL, Thelma Baxter, Gary “Cigar” Carver and wife Gail, and Debbie Wylie and husband Jackie all of Newport. Oss and Edith later became the proud Papaw and Mamaw Carver to nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Papaw was notorious for his “milk a mouse” routine and “thumping” all of his grandchildren. He told stories from his childhood and life to all who would listen. He could make you laugh until you cried with his tall tales. He could also change your heart forever by learning one of his many life’s lessons. All of his grandchildren feel blessed and forever grateful to all the love and time he spent in each one’s life. Papaw’s grandchildren include Cindy McGaha of Boone, NC, Brian and Allen Carver of Jupiter, FL, Gloria Hoekstra of Columbus, MS, Jennifer Husky, Gary and Olivia Carver, and Chelsea and Jake Wylie all of Newport. Papaw’s great-grandchildren include Hannah, Ben, and Ella Carver all of Jupiter, FL, Jackson, Robert, Carolyn, and Palmer Hoekstra all of Columbus, MS, Logan and Ian Huskey of Newport, TN and Marietta McGaha of Boone, NC. Oss also had some very special friends in life that include Delmar Lovingood of 80 years, Landon Giles, Keith and Teresa Williams and family, brother-in-laws Ralph and Roy Hill, sister-in-laws Reva Owenby and Brenda Winstead. Oss was preceded in death by his parents Scott and Ellen Ball and John Carver, wife Edith Carver, three sisters and four brothers. Pallbearers will be Jake Wylie, Brian Carver, Gary Carver, Matthew Hill, Paul Huskey, and T.J. Rolen, honorary pallbearers will be Landon Giles and Delmar Lovingood.

The celebration of Oscar Carver’s life will be at Brown Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Friday January 2, from 5:00-7:30 p.m. with service at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Leon Large officiating. The burial will be on Saturday January 3, at 11:00 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

    Debbie and family,
We are so sorry. I know you all kept high hopes and spirits that he would get better and return home, as did we. It just won’t be the same going outside and not seeing him sitting in his chair or his swing taking in the sunshine and enjoying the fresh air. The kids always enjoyed talking with him and listening to his stories, and I know they will miss that. He was a very blessed and fortunate man to have such a loving and caring family. May God Bless and keep all of you. You all are in our thoughts and prayers.
Love, Harvena, Cherie, Chelsie, Lil’ David, & Chase (Doc)
